Lately the boys (Will is 5 and Sam is 3) have been asking a lot of questions—and giving a lot of answers—about heaven. I thought I’d share a bit of what I’ve learned.
Sam: Mommy? When are we going to heaven: today or tomorrow?
Will: No Sam. We go to heaven when we get dead.
Sam: Awwwwwww! I want to go today!
…………………………..
Will: Mommy, where’s heaven?
Me: Well, no one really knows where it is exactly, but people often think of heaven as being beyond the sky that we see.
Will: (Patient sigh) Mommy, is it on the clouds or in the blue part?
Sam: It’s in the bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue part!
Will: No. I think it’s on the clouds. ‘Cause then you can build your bouncy castle on the clouds and you can bounce there.
Sam: But what about the giants that live on the clouds?
Will: Well, maybe they just have to go somewhere else. Like maybe China.
………………………………
Will: Mom, when I go to heaven, I’m going to make a slide and come back down to earth and scare people. Boo!
……………………………..
Sam: Mommy, is George Washington buried under the Washington Monument? (I’ll be honest here, I have no idea how he knows about the Washington Monument.)
Will: Mommy, if he’s buried there, how will he get his bones up to heaven?
……………………………..
Sam: I think Heaven will be like a big store.
Me: Why do you say that?
Sam: ‘Cuz if we’re going to leave our old bodies here at the cemetery, then that’s where we’ll get our new bodies! (He then went on to demonstrate shopping with a list: I need two feet please!)
……………………………..
Will: Mommy, do we know anyone in heaven?
Me: Yes, your great grandpa is there for sure and many other family members. Lots of people to see there.
Will: I can’t wait to see them and give them a big hug.
(Mommy and Daddy were in tears at this moment.)
What wonderful discussions! They touch my heart so very much.
